Racist internet rants are both ridiculous and entertaining. This particular one has taken the internet by storm. We here at Midwest Nerds have a feeling that the star of the video’s future career in political science may be doomed before it even starts. But don’t worry, she can always fall back on her vast knowledge of Asian cultures and languages to pursue a career in Ethnic Studies.
Last week we talked about game devs rating their own games. This week we talk about fans of an indie game who started trashing other games to boost their favorite on the charts. What do you guys think? How can services filter out illegitimate ratings?
Other topics this week include Bioware’s response to homophobic complaints, Duke’s unsurprising delay, the Amazon Android app store, and the great Donkey Kong battle royale of ’11.
Steve had some technical issues on this episode, so we try to cover for him as best as we can in the Zombie Tip of the Week. Don’t worry though, he’ll be back in episode #64 to drop some extra knowledge on us all.
We-we-we so excited to talk about the emotional breakdown Rebecca Black is going to have after reading all of the YouTube comments about her “hit” song Friday. We also so excited to discuss the freak out that the internet had over a BioWare employee giving Dragon Age II a good review on Metacritic. Speaking of which, everyone should go rate us in iTunes: We sure as hell did. That included five full stars and a glowing review. Whatcha gonna do about it Internet? Noth’n!
You know what else you’re not going to do anything about? Blue shells. Last week Hideki Konna, the man behind Mario Kart, defended the blue shell to Kotaku. This week the Midwest Nerds, four dudes who know nothing about making games, give their thoughts about that spiky little bastard. An email from Nick is good for a few laughs, where he discusses the emotional place he was in during a recent life decision (or cell phone purchase, but whatever). Also making the list this week is discrimination in gaming – we talk about a study done by the video games research center at MIT about hate speech in multiplayer gaming. It ties in nicely with an article Nick posted here a few weeks ago. Steve finishes things off by kick’n in the back seat with his Zombie Tip of the Week.
Alien contact has happened. We are Borg. You will be assimi… Wait, nevermind, it’s just some bacteria. We’re cool. It may not be traditional little green men or Klingons but some dude says he found proof of alien life on a rock that hit earth. This week we talk about space, aliens, robots, and even some seriously biblical shit.
Slow and steady wins the race. That’s the method we decided to take on the show this week. Instead of our normal super packed segment format we have four larger topics of discussion along with Steve’s Zombie tip to fill out the show.
I already mentioned the final frontier discussion, but we have a few more topics to get through. The 3DS and NGP have us all wondering if anyone cares about mobile gaming devices or if we’ve all moved on to quick and dirty games playable on smartphones. Dragon Age II has a thin actiony shell – Joel lets us know if it allows DA to melt in his mouth, but not in his hands. The necessity of Betas is brought up after a Cliff Bleszinski quote about the quality of Gears 3 multiplayer.
We also talk about the tragedy that happened, and is still happening, in Japan. More specifically, we talk about how comments on the internet have once again made us lose our faith in humanity.
