MWN #85 – Old Republic Blues

December 3rd, 2011 by Burnsie

This week on the Midwest Nerds Podcast:

Jason got a chance to play SW:The Old Republic, and since the Non Disclosure Agreement has been lifted, find out what he thinks of Bioware’s soon-to-be released Galactic MMO.

Are video game writers just writing for each other? We discuss Leigh Alexander’s recent article for EDGE magazine.

Also, we once again revisit the topic “Is it ok to leave user reviews for a game if you happened to work on it”. We’re not sure, but we’re pretty sure it’s ok to leave glowing user reviews for your own podcast.

Plus:
-Why gamers pay for services that just don’t work
-We take a trip through the reader comments Kotaku has ever seen
-Gamestop’s not making enough money, and it’s because you’re poor

Plus Steve’s Zombie tip of the week, and random inter-host bickering! We’ve done the research, we know what you want, and it’s all in this week’s Midwest Nerds Podcast!

My REALLY!?!?!? moment of this episode:

-Joel, “I hate using the word ‘High Brow’ in this situation, we’re talking about a fucking video game.” (around 21:30)

It’s just you and Roger Ebert with that perspective, broheim. ;)

As for the video game review discussion. I think both Burnsie and Joel are wrong. The “average” anyone is moderately competent at not thinking for themselves and “googling”. In order to be good at not thinking for themselves one must be good at quickly distilling down the information you need either from A) Wikipedia or B) just reading the first two sentences that show up behind a link in google (without clicking the link). As such, there is room for all types of reviews (even the High Brow ones). People will click the link, or never click the link, depending on their disposition.
